Are tropical rain forests destroyed for the production of paper and board ?

The paper and board industry does, as a rule, not use tropical hard wood because most of it is totally unsuitable for paper making. The destruction of rainforests is for more than 90% caused by land clearance for agriculture and for use of wood as fuel. Mainly in less developed regions, some 12 million hectares are cleared worldwide for fuel use and agriculture.

More than 50% of the wood consumption worldwide, and particularly in developing countries, is used as fuel for cooking and heating.
