Can paper breathe ?

Paper being a structure made from individual (cellulose) fibres, has a capacity to let limited amounts of air to go through. This can e.g. be important for packing soft cheese which has to mature while it remains in its wrapper.

When no air permeability is allowed, the paper surface can be closed by means of a coating or by laminating it with e.g. aluminium foil.
