How much wood is needed to produce 1000 kilos of paper ?

One hectare of European forest contains 100 to 200 m3 of wood, depending on the type and age of the forest.

For producing 1 ton of paper 2,5 to 4,0 m3 of wood is needed, depending on the type of pulp. In theory this means that 25 to 80 tons of paper can be made out of 1 hectare or on average 250 m2 of forest for 1000 kilos.

However, it should not be forgotten that:

  • As a rule forest owners will NOT “clear cut” an entire area, but select one tree here and another one there in order to keep their “green capital” intact and to create space for neighbouring trees to grow bigger.
  • around 50% of the fibre material used for making paper and board in Europe is recovered paper. And recycled fibres can be used as often as 5 to 7 times !
