What happens to printing ink that is removed ?

Recovered paper that is printed usually has to be “de-inked” before it can be recycled into a new paper product. In this de-inking process the printing ink together with coating clay and very short fibres are separated. These residues can be burned for energy production or used in composting or road surfacing.
