What is direct metallizing ?

Direct (vacuum) metallizing is a process whereby an ultra thin layer (0,02 - 0,04 µm) of aluminium is deposited on the paper surface to give it a metallic gold or silver coloured look.

Paper passes through the vacuum chamber in a metallizing machine. Inside this chamber aluminium is melted in a temperature of 1500o C. and in this situation it evaporates and condenses on the paper surface that passes at high speed over the aluminium.

Metallized paper is primarily used for beer bottle labels and for the inner liner of cigarette packs. In the latter application it replaces a paper-aluminium foil laminate, making the paper biodegradable and much easier to recycle.
