What is the greenhouse effect ?
The “greenhouse effect” is a situation when heat from the sun is unable to escape from the earth’s atmosphere because of the build-up of gases, the main one being carbon dioxide (CO2). Because these gases prevent the heat from escaping, they act like the glass walls of a greenhouse and make the global temperature rise.
CO2 is released when fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) are burnt (to make energy). The world’s use of these fossil fuels releases +/- 5 billion tonnes of carbon per year resulting in an increase of the proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere by 5% each 10 years.
