Why does the paper industry use wood as raw material ?

High quality paper, such as is needed for packaging food and making top quality labels, is made from cellulose fibre. Cellulose can be derived from wood or other annual vegetable fibres, such as cereal straw. Primarily wood is used because it is available in the volumes needed by the global paper and board industry. More than 90% of all ‘virgin fibre” comes from harvested trees which in all managed forests are replaced by many new ones.

Because cellulose based paper is easily recyclable, the same fibres can be used up to 7 times until they have their strength and capacity to bond.
